Vote for which ever of these you think is the best quality horror anime, some of these are also considered "dark" anime and are not totally horror, but they do have psychological horror aspects from what I have observed.

Mirai Nikki is famous for truly defining an extremist yandere, namely Yuno, the female protagonist of the series. It is also a very intense anime with heavy emotional drama for almost every participant in the survival game the anime is centered around. I would not recommend this or any of the above mentioned animes for the kiddies.
Good choice. Though if it is the only one you've recognized and you had a strong stomach and emotions of steel, I'd suggest watching or reading the rest of the mentioned ones. Excellent animes in my opinion.

Umineko is also made by the same people who made Higurashi, and in my opinion Umineko was more intense... but that's just my opinion.

Umineko had an amazing light novel which you should read. The story line and character build up is breathtaking, it truly is. It allows you to also choose your own ending . Anyway Elfen Lied <3 forever

Another is my favorite horror/mystery anime. It felt like a Stephan King story. I recommend taking the time to find the uncensored versions. It's entertaining, interesting, and has a enough over-the-top blood spurts to please any fan of bloodier animes. It's light on action and some of the deaths are rather predictable, but the few that aren't are very gruesome and evoke a deep nausea that few animes actually can. Plus, it has one of the most realistic anime relationships I have seen (given I haven't watched many animes at all). Though, no matter the dub you decide to watch, they're all pretty poor but they work and get the job done.
By realistic relationship, I mean they aren't gonna kiss and be all lovey-dovey when everyone is dying, but it's obvious that they feel strongly for each other. It's a great anime with a FANTASTIC twist at the end. However, it does suffer from a few anime tropes and stereotypes that do get old. On the whole, it's very entertaining and worth a watch.
Then there's Elfen Lied. That doesn't need much explanation as it's already known and accepted as the most heart-wrenching anime ever created.

Another wasn't exactly horror to me... it seemed to be more of a dark anime theme than a horror. But so was Elfen Lied the episodes, the manga was a little more horror related for me. But then again I obsess over anime. I've watched or read 64 of them.
