A Creation of Desires
“Man is a creation of desire, not a creation of needs.” (Gaston Bachelard). I think what Bachelard meant by this was that every man, every human, always has desires. We were created with the ability to want everything, and we usually do. We do not usually need that much, except from food, shelter, and things to make ourselves decent. Everyone has desired something at one point or another. Some desires are stronger than other desires. You may not think about what a desire is, but any time you want something, even as simple as a pop or snack, you desire that object. One can desire another person, as well. I believe there are differences between lust and the desire of a person, though. Lust is usually sexual, and desires can want them for any reason. I desire the company of my close friends. This is an interesting quote, but I have another one for you.
“There are no better masters than poverty and wants.” This is an old, Danish proverb. I totally agree with this quote because I think if you want something, that desire will dictate your actions whether you know it or not. If you truly desire something, you will do whatever you can to make sure you get what you desire. Some people desire power or money. These are kinds of stereotypes, but people that desire these things do everything they can to get more of it. The rich usually make things harder on the poor, businesses take whatever shortcuts they can to get more money. These types of people desire to be, what is in their minds, the best of the best. If you desire something, you will try to get that. Even without thinking about it, people go out of their ways all the time to meet their desires. Someone might think that they need a new phone, and lazy kid might get a job so that they can afford something they want.
I would say that a desire is a want that is almost a need. Desires are things that we, as living creatures, or maybe a particular person, desperately want. Things besides humans have desires; a cat might desire catnip, but does not need it. Everyone has desires, and people desperately want to meet their own desires. A dictionary says that desire is “a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen.” Although I agree with the fact that it says it is a strong feeling, I do not know if I can explain how strong desires can be.
I'll tie you in my arms, I will smother you
We'll tell each other lies, I will tell the truth
I'll color in the sky, and I'll color you
I want to join your skin again, again,
Again, again, again, again, again, again
Again
We will run away from danger
We will run away
I-I-I-I-I will fight for
You have stolen all my senses
There's a fever in my heart
And you are taking my defenses
You are pulling me apart
Forever we are and we are dying
And we still be standing on our ground
So I will take away my feeling
I will be an animal
An animal
This is an excerpt of the song ‘Animal’ by Ellie Goulding. I chose to quote this song, specifically these lines, because of how I think it describes a desire. The first and second lines in this excerpt are talking about what the singer will do to someone they desire, and what they will do with each other. The fourth line talks about wanting to be close to someone. The second section talks about running from danger with someone you desire, wanting to be with them and protect them. People can and probably will fight for some or all of their desires, depending on how bad they want something. I think the first line of the last section says that someone can be so focused on a desire that they do not pay attention to all of their senses; they can neglect certain things to focus on another aspect of their desire.
As Gaston Bachelard once said, “Man is a creation of desire, not a creation of needs.” Everyone experiences desires; it is human nature to want things. I, too, like many people out there, desire things on a day-to-day basis. As with others, I desire many things and I desire some things more than other things. We all have personal experience with desires. Right now, I really desire to go to my friend’s sweet 16-birthday party this Saturday and I hope we have fun together. I also really desire to hang out with my girlfriend soon since she has been sick, and I have not seen her in a while.
Desire is what wins the little battles people go through every day. Desire pushes us forward; it makes us want to try things. Desires are what win sports games, elections, all the little and big struggles everyone goes through at one point or another. Without desires, people are empty. Everyone needs and has desires. Desires make us sleep, they make us get up, and they make us go get food, or snacks, or hang out with friends.
