As I go to work
I see many beautiful places
From lush forests
To barren deserts.
I go to work seeing
But not noticing
As I go to work
I think back to
When I was in high school
I was happy and immature,
Blissfully unaware of what awaited me
As I go to work
I constantly glance about,
For any enemies that would kill me.
I clean my rifle in
Anticipation of the coming kill
As I go to work
I am suspicious of every shadow,
Wary of the fact that
It could hide an enemy
Just as dangerous as I.
As I go to work
I realize that
I have lost all of my
Old happiness and ignorance,
And replaced them with
Coldness and suspicion.
As I go to work
I think of my loved ones,
And how I continue to leave them.
I mourn for the holidays and birthdays
With them that I have missed.
As I go to work
I steel myself against
What lies ahead.
For I am not hunting animals,
I am hunting other people.
I steel myself against the shock
Of seeing another man
Die from my actions.
As I go to work
I hope that I
Never lose my humanity.
That I shall always remember
That I am human.
I think of the fact that
What I’m doing will protect others.
As I go to work
I think of the names that my kind goes by.
We are known as killers and cowards.
Both may be true,
But what we really are
Is the silent hand of Justice,
The unseen guardians of peace,
The dark knights.
