Even when I couldn't speak,
There was always the tick, tick, tick
Of my tongue against my teeth,
Trying desperately to find the words
To reach you...
I always found my teeth
Pressing against one another,
A flickering click, click, click
Just a moment closer
To formulating
Vowels and consonants.
Now the ticking and clicking
Has stopped short
As I realize
No matter what I say
I can't save you.
You never heard the sounds, anyways.
All the clicks and ticks
Were a silent secret
Kept between my ears and mouth...
