Here is a little short story I formed from a book I've been planning for a while. Sorry if it looks rough, I haven't done much for the whole thing lately!
Mirazaar sighed, shifting and turning his massive, blue body to face a young woman, and a child. He had just smelled them.
"What would human be doing at my nest at this time of night?" He spoke with his thick, rich accent, standing. His large legs seemed to be toothpicks compared to the massive wingspan of the giant blue scaled canopies. Frost dragons weren't the prettiest, but they were a sight to behold at sunset.
"Mirazaar, I want to speak with you, about accepting a rider. I heard that your previous rider died from a fall you couldn't save him from, for risk of both of your lives. I want my daughter to become your rider. Will you accept, Mirazaar?" The woman spoke with an accent he had never heard. Surely not from his realm, but rather beautiful, in a way. The child seemed to hide as Mirazaar snorted, a puff of white mist draining the warmth from the summer air.
"Very well, miss. I shall accept your child as my rider. She will train with a blade made from my scales until the day she can mount me and we can go into battle. Your daughter is now Lathriin." He let out a loud roar, signalling his acceptance to other dragons around the Nest Pillars, massive spires of rock where dragons nested and slept.
The girl stepped forward, fumbling with a saddle.
"U-um, a saddle..." Her voice was small, and her barely picked it up as he laid his head in front of her.
"No need, child. My scales do not chafe or burn. Come closer, and embrace me. I will bestow upon you the gift of I could not give even myself. I give you my trust, and my life."
That was all ten years ago, when the girl was ten. Mirazaar enjoyed reliving that moment, when he gained and gave trust to a human female he had accepted. His thoughts were interrupted by yelling.
"Mirazaar! It's Falion's soldiers. They're coming to destroy the Pillars." Lathriin said. The name he had given her still suited her well.
"All in good time, Lathriin. We must wait. The others have found new Pillars to nest on, and these will only get in the way of new cities. They must fall. Come, we must fly." Mirazaar sank lower than he already was, Lathriin mounting him. With that, he rocketed upward so quickly, he seemed to be a giant blue icicle. He made a wide circle before forcing his massive body forward. The feeling of flight, the feeling of freedom. He had given more than he thought to himself, and to Lathriin.
"Wait, Mirazaar. Did Falion say to you why he wanted to destroy the Pillars?" Her curiosity was great, and he couldn't ignore it.
"No, Lathriin. I only know he desires power, and if he uses what remains of my nest for his purposes, we could be in danger. If he makes arrows from the nests, we are truly doomed."
"But why? Why would he do such a thing to you?"
"The human man is but one reason I love being a wyrm, Lathriin. They do not know why they do such things. There is a reason the All-Maker made females much smarter than males, even in the dragon race."
"Yes, Mirazaar. I understand." She smiled, embracing his neck, wrapping her arms around what she could. She seemed to shrink on Mirazaar's back, since he was the largest dragon in history, with a wingspan of one hundred feet, a full length of three hundred feet, and a height of two hundred forty three. He was menacing, and never had much a challenge.
"Very well..." He mumbled. That was when Lathriin was grabbed by the hideous form of a Harpy, a winged chicken woman. Her screams were only his motivation to save her as he chased after her, nearly roaring in dismay when he saw the cave filled with blood and harpies. Only more determination.
The Harpy harshly threw her down, sending a wave of clucking laughter through the massive pack. Mirazaar had just smashed through the cave entrance, and snapped up some of the creatures.
"She is not yours, foul vermin!" He roared loudly, and blew a massive stream of mist that froze anything it touched. Soon, the cave was filled with ice, frozen Harpies shattered to bits, and an untouched Lathriin.
"Mirazaar...You just..." Lathriin lunged and clung tightly to his neck, sobbing. How could she not? She had nearly suffered the fate of death by the teeth and claws of chicken women.
"Yes, Lathriin. I saved you." He snorted happily.
"Remember this lesson well, Lathriin. A true bond is formed from friendship and hardship."
-End
So, I hope you enjoyed that little piece. Just my way of saying that friendship is more important than anything you could want or need.
