This is a story I hope to do something with in the near future. Feedback is appreciated.
Mica always loved climbing trees, a pastime she never gave up no matter how much her parents scolded her for it. As she neared the top she would always look down to see just how far she had climbed, taking pride in every inch she had traveled. Mica climbed usually just to think to herself, a pastime that had started to become more and more frequent. At the top she found a suitable branch to sit on and began to bask in the view she had found.
While Mica told herself that she embarked on these escapades to find a quiet place to think, her real motive was to catch a glimpse of a Giant. Every shred of free time she got would be spent searching for the tallest tree in hopes she could catch a glimpse of one of the quiet creatures.
Mica often remembered the time when she had first seen a Giant. It had been twelve years ago on the forest wall when her father took her on his mid day walks. She’d never forget the feelings she first experienced when she saw its head breaking the surface on the tree line as it walked along its path. She had never felt as small as she did in that one moment where she stared in amazement at the passing Giant. From that moment on Giants became somewhat of an obsession to her.
“Are you alright up there?” called her brother, “You know mother would have a cow if you got hurt out here.”
“Aw, Jerry I never knew how much you cared about me,” Mica taunted “It’s so thoughtful of you.”
Her brother glared at her from down below----well she couldn't actually see him, but she knew her brother well enough to know the face he was giving her. Sadly her twin brother Gerald was apart of the deal she made with her parents after she had gotten hurt in the forest a few of years back. In it she had agreed to bring along her brother whenever she wanted to make the journey outside the walls. Of course this meant that she had to go through the trouble of convincing her brother to come with her every time she wanted to leave.
“You and I both know my affection for you doesn't travel that deep Mica,” he replied bluntly, “I only hoped to remind you, seeing that my personal health depends on yours.” After that he seemed to pause to consider what she had said to him before. “And stop calling me Jerry unless you want me to go home and tell Mom that you snuck out last week without asking.”
Somehow she knew he had intended the surprised look that spread across her face at the moment he mentioned her, once thought, well kept secret. She cursed her brother for his acute attentiveness as looked down to see his smug face staring back at her.
“Fine. I’m fine” she said through clenched teeth. Somehow when she and her brother were born someone decided that each child would be given the tools necessary to push every last button on the other until they drove each other crazy. That was Mica’s and Gerald’s relationship in a nutshell, a constant, endless battle where the winner is determined by who storms off first. Mica liked to think that she was in the lead at this point.
“Well that’s fantastic” he remarked sarcastically. “I don’t suppose you’ll be coming down anytime soon? If you aren't…..well I hate to the bearer of bad news but it’s late and Mom is going to start making dinner soon and we need to be home to help her.”
Mica looked up at the sky as if she had just noticed the signs of nightfall approaching, she scanned the horizon one last time in hopes of catching a glim---. Her train of thought was interrupted as her time spent waiting finally paid off. In the distance, far off but still noticeable, was a Giant lumbering in its silent march through the forest. She couldn't help but marvel at it’s natural grace and enormity.
“Seriously when are you coming down Mica? If you don’t come down I’ll just go home and explain to Mom what kept you” Gerald interrupted.
“Would you be quiet!” she practically hissed. “There is a Giant and I would like it very much if it’s beauty wasn't stained with your constant complaining”. Her brother shrugged to himself as he leaned against the the trunk of the tree. He sighed with desperation knowing that when Mica spotted a Giant there was no budging her.
“I really wish I could understand your obsession with those things. They just seem like mindless husks to me” he said. At this point Mica was just ignoring him. It wasn’t the first time he questioned her fascination with the Giants, so she didn't really care what he had to say.
